International hearing system industry visits Oldenburg
HörTech and the cluster of excellence " Hearing4all unite industry and research from all over the world in Oldenburg
<Oldenburg, June 2019>
For the ninth time, the elite of international hearing aid developers met in Oldenburg on 13 and 14 June at the invitation of HörTech gGmbH and the Hearing4all Excellence Cluster of the University of Oldenburg. Engineers from renowned companies and top-class hearing researchers from all over the world discussed current challenges and trends in the industry with the Oldenburg scientists and developed solutions that are to be further advanced in pre-competitive consortia. The researchers and developers talked shop about new ideas for signal processing and future trends in the field of sensor technology, speech recognition and the use of cloud services. "The international hearing aid industry is in a state of upheaval because smartphones and "intelligent" earphone technology are assuming more and more hearing aid functions and the hearing aid is increasingly becoming the communication centre at the ear of our patients", comments Prof. Dr. Dr. Birger Kollmeier, head of the Development Forum, on the current trends, "which is why the need for information and discussion is higher than ever before".
The application-oriented Oldenburg hearing research facilities (HörTech gGmbH, Hörzentrum Oldenburg GmbH and the Fraunhofer IDMT's Hearing, Speech and Audio Technology division) already demonstrated on the previous day at the so-called Company Showcase that it is possible to fall back on already proven technology "made in Oldenburg". With more than 20 years of experience in the field of audiology and audio technology, the companies presented solutions that meet the latest market developments. The events focused on technologies for self-adaptive hearing aids and headphones, scenarios for machine learning of hearing systems and ear sensors, as well as hearing support and speech recognition beyond medical use.
"The Hearing Aid Developers Forum and the Company Showcase show once again that the Oldenburg location offers optimal conditions for translation due to its close connection to basic research on the one hand and clinical practice on the other. As a bridge to those affected and to the hearing system market, we carry research to people," explains Sebastian Quirandt, Managing Director of HörTech gGmbH and Hörzentrum Oldenburg GmbH, enthusiastically.
