Prof. Dr. Dr. Birger Kollmeier takes office as President of EFAS

At this year's meeting of the European Federation of Audiological Societies (EFAS) in Lisbon, Prof. Dr. Dr. Birger Kollmeier took office as President of EFAS. In the past years Kollmeier already had a say in the fate of the Federation as Secretary General and Incoming President. As a so-called Past President, in two years' time he will assume the role of an advisory board member.

EFAS is the umbrella organisation of European audiological societies. It is driving forward the Europe-wide standardization of audiology. EFAS has developed the concept of the "General Audiologist" and the "Audiological Specialist", which, among other things, was the inspiration behind the foundation of the Oldenburg Bachelor's and Master's degree programme "Hearing Technology and Audiology".

Kollmeier has been researching and teaching at the University of Oldenburg since 1993. He is spokesman of the "Hearing4all" Cluster of Excellence. He is also Scientific Director of Hörzentrum Oldenburg GmbH and the Fraunhofer Project Group for Hearing, Speech and Audio Technology. He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Lower Saxony Science Prize (2011) and the German Future Prize (Federal President's Prize for Technology and Innovation, 2012).

The aim of EFAS is to bring audiology to and from all European countries, enabling interchange in the fields of education, training, hearing assessment, screening and research.  This benefits our child and adult patients with hearing disorders and also encourages research collaboration.  EFAS is intended as a forum where Audiologists, ENT professionals and Hearing Instrument Professionals, as well as researchers, can move forward together.
